A 5% to 10% decrease in body weight can indicate that your bird has some type of illness. Because pet birds (parrots etc.) are prey animals, their "internal hardrive" or natural instinct tells them to "mask" many external symptoms so that they do not appear weak to predatory animals.

 

Weight is one dimension that they cannot mask. If a bird is feeling ill (due to an infection or due to a myriad of other possible ailments or diseases) it will usually develop a loss of appetite and begin to lose weight.

 

It is prudent and wise to weigh baby birds everyday before handfeeding and to weigh adult birds typically every month to ensure that you have a benchmark against which to measure significant weight loss. You can obviously wait to see clear visual signs of sickness such as lethargy, deterioration of feather condition, fluid discharge. However,
if you wait too long it can be fatal to your bird. When birds are ill, they deteriorate quite quickly.
